You can do a lot of good without waiting for permission from anyone.”
Bilateral people can often get short shrift from the rest of the world, Drollen says.
“People think that all we do is spend our time locked in our homes,” he says. “People think we’re all scared and want to run away.”
Drollen spent two weeks this spring at a training center outside of Chicago. He left wearing a baseball cap with Debito’s mug on it. He can’t take it off because of the severe migraines that would follow. He says he’s had two in the past two weeks.
Drollen is a strong, sturdy man, but he looked like a victim when he sat down for a conversation with Debito in the Auyouguys House.
“I’ve only been in Japan for about a month,” he says. “The last time I was here, about 20 years ago, they had no laws against beating people up.”
That was when he was just learning the language.

Tamil actor Arun Jethmalani, who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of the women in the 2005 December 13 train mishap case, has said he was being targeted in the crime because of his political work.
Former Union minister Arun Jethmalani, who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2005 December 13 train mishap case, has said he was being targeted in the crime because of his political work.
"This is a case of targeted elimination (of the political leader)," Jethmalani told PTI.
He alleged that while the state was busy trying to fast track the case of the lethal train mishap, they had failed to take note of a statement by him that contradicted the statement of a key witness in the case.
"Instead, they are targeting me. I was being targeted because of my political work. If the state government had to bring about a change in my political stature, they would not have let the case (against me) lapse and they would have handed me over to the courts.
"They brought me (to court) because of my political stature and not on the basis of any judicial process," Jethmalani said.
He said he had earlier stated before the court that he had not put pressure on the CBI but that "some external force had intervened" and that he had no idea as to who it was.
"But now when I learn that this (a political leader) was involved in one of the most important accident cases and that it was a CBI investigation, I cannot help but feel that it was a targeted elimination," he said.
"But it is very wrong if the state says that they had no idea (about my political stature). They do not know me.
"Let them make an investigation of my cases. I am not going to help them with any information, but if they want to make such an investigation, they should do it. I have nothing to hide," he said.
Jethmalani alleged that the state had not gone in for the most crucial aspects of the case.
"I am surprised that the state has not gone in for the most crucial aspects of the case, for example why they should have put the CBI in the first place.
"I have not put pressure on any CBI officer. If I was to be investigated, they should have gone after their investigation properly," he said.
